Some time this mid year, there was alot of talk about an internal rift within Dahon and speculation from industry pundits, distribution partners and industry watchers held their breathe when the world’s best and largest volume foldie bike brand ( They sold more than 200, 000 folding bikes) some might say – decide to call it a day with in-fighting!
Thankfully for us like a good movie, there is a interesting twist to this and with people who rise above adversities, survivors come out stronger. “ There is no education like adversity. ~Disraeli”
So we believe they now move forward and each focus on building their own market share and mindshare based on the merits of their own line up and USPs.
So here is how it has pan out: Tern – as a new brand that designs bikes for urban commuting has emerged and Dahon will continue to range under the “Freedom unfolds” theme.
So what does this mean to Singapore folding bike enthusiasts? Well for starters you have now ANOTHER high quality folding bike brand, with all the love for cycling and eco friendly mission, designed by cyclists and designing bikes that are brillaint to ride and has brought the world of folding joints to another new level and benchmark. Do not believe? Come and see and test drive for yourself!
And for those who are still in love with their Dahon, there is always the new range (hopefully we can get the distributor to confirm soon) and they move on from where they split – The world’s largest folding bike manufacturer ( and they still are!) so we eagerly await. Days of Dahon are not over! We are still selling our Vectors X10 and X20 very well and the Tern Verges will not come till late Q1 2012. Not to mention, the C6 is coming soon.
We have to apologise as we were requested by the Distributor to observe a black out period on Tern but here are some of the interesting information we have about Tern and what ever morsels of info we have on Dahon 2012.
Why Tern?
For the team designing these bikes, through adversity they hold true for the principles of doing the right thing and holding on to what’s right - It’s time to turn around, to do the right thing and a turn for the better. It’s not tool late.
Tern is also a Artic swallow and the logo is shaped as a origami bird made from folding. Light, foldable and fast.
Terns are designed for urban commuting and ALL ABOUT THE RIDE, not about weight weenies or the highest number of gears…
Terns are designed for heavier riders - 110 KG as the new benchmark for all foldies ranged and for some models – 115KG (giving Bike Friday a run for their money?). At this weight EVEN the more you should take up cycling.
Welded joints are smoothen ( ala Tyrell?). Stiffness in frames are improved.
There are NO 16 inch wheeled models. I suspect the Tern gang is working on something.
5 years warranty on folding mechanisms and joints based on on manufacturing defects.
The new innovations in folding joints and folding concept raises the bar so all the wannabes out there – better watch out! Tern is here. We no longer need to turn here or there to avoid. The NKOTB ( New kid on the block ) is here to punch above its weight and My Bike Shop as a Premium Dealer and having more than 50 models, 10 leading brands in folding bikes is here to help you narrow down to the folding bike that matches your lifestyle and your wallet!
