Some of you know Paul Lim, he used to work for us at My Bike Shop. For the rest of us, he was known for his smile and helpfulness and also for his speed on his folding bike. He was always involved in worthy causes like the recent Charity ride that helped raised S$200,000 for the Japan Disaster fund and also helped out at the ST Pocket Fund events.

Paul passed away early this morning in a very unfortunate accident. Paul was on his way to a ride to Desaru via the ECP this morning and he hitched a ride from a friend. The truck that he was in was crashed into by a drunk driver and impact from the rear caused the truck to tip on its side. Just look at how damaged the truck is! One of the 2 survivors of the accident told us how the impact of the car from the rear end that came out of nowhere, caused the truck to veer and then tilt over. The impact was so great that the rear door was damaged immediately sending the personal effects stored at the rear of the truck all over the place.

As friends rushed to the scene, an account was given that the driver and his passsenger (girlfriend) appeared high and intoxicated and even had trouble reversing the car into a safe zone. When police arrived, the 19 year old errant driver even challenged the police why the driver of the truck was not tested with the breathe analyser and only he was tested!
It is really sad that the only thing the parents of the driver who then arrived at the scene of the accident in their beaming new 5 series BMW ( anyone got their number plate?) was only concerned about their son not going to jail and NO concern for the 2 injured and our dying friend. It was said that Paul’s entire face was swollen, clearly suggesting that Paul suffered severe head injuries and died on the way to the hospital.
This is the photo of the errant driver, 19 years old, he was drunk and he was not even one bit remorseful! Thanks to this 19 year drunk driver, we have 2 young children who have now lost their beloved father and a widowed wife who has to provide for their care and education and upbringing by herself. A death has happened and I sincerely hope the Traffic police and the Civil Court will find fair punishment and award damages that is now fair to 3 lives that has been adversely impacted due to his inconsiderable act!
We share in the grief and the loss of a dear friend and a fellow foldable bike rider.
He is survived by his wife Sandra and 2 young children, Silas, aged 12 and Gideon, aged 14 and his body rests at Blk 14 Toh Yi Drive from 1 May till 4 May. Paul dotes on his kids and he works very hard for them. Gideon was clinging onto the father’s coffin when it arrived! (Just heart wrenching to watch!) We ask for your generous donations as we are collecting white gifts to help defray the costs for the funeral and also help support his wife and kids now that he is no longer with them. You can make your cheques to “Leong Wang Hui” and mail it to 25 Jalan Mas Puteh S128630. Please mark at the back of the cheque your name and contact number so that we can consolidate and pass the cheques to Sandra (Paul’s wife is Leong Wang Hui). After that we will list down the cheque numbers and donors.

Sandra, Gideon and Silas hugging each other as they bid Paul farewell
Rest in peace Paul, we will always remember you!

Dear Sandra . Your husband was a great man. Caring and loving always cheerful.
We will miss him alot. You be strong and courages and may The Lord give you peace and determination to live on. Paul has just gone home to the Lord.
Take Care.
God Bless
as for that scoundrel he will be face the law. Jail term is for sure.
justice will prevail. whoever you are hope your guilt will border your conscious
You be man enough to own up. Dont try to make up stories.
this is such a sad tragedy. I couldn’t believe the news when I heard it… tomorrow I am dedicating our sunday ride in Paul memory.
Hope that drunken brastard have more than the law can punished him. To the burning hell he must perished to. Paul is a good man that do not deserve such ending. May God bless his mother & his family.
Paul was my swimming instructor since I was four…he taught me a good three years till I was seven. He is also a member of the same church I go to. Dear uncle Paul may you rest in peace and the heavenly Father give you eternal peace in his kingdom. We will miss you very much.
安息吧,保罗。永远怀念你……

I got this read from a facebook friend. Though I don’t know Uncle Paul, I feel very shock and sad. The errant 19 yr old should be jailed and responsible for Uncle Paul’s family’s future cost of living.
Sad to say such well to do parents will seek connected ties to reduce the charges.
God bless the family. My condolences. Since the 19 year old guy is still young, he ought to face the maximum punishment for being not remorseful. Even if he does in the end, he is still ought to be punish with the maximum sentence. Please don’t let this driver on the road anymore, i feared for everyone’s safety.
Please someone post this heart breaking news on every web sites and I know that the law is blind & will punished him to the maximum years in prison.
I was shocked when I came across the news. Another young driver causing death. May be, after watching HK drama《情越双白线》then you will only realised how difficult it will be for their family to cope afther losing the love ones in an traffic accident. Remember A moment of rage cause a lifetime of regrets.
Know of this from FB link and am truly sadden.
I really hope the law will change to be a much stiffer one for drink driving and causing accidents that cost the lives. Age is no excuse.
My condolences. God bless your family…Amyn
We have lost a good friend and a fellow cyclist. The 19 yrs old drunk driver should receive the highest punishment. His arrogant look really makes my blood boils. His parents should also receive some form of punishment from the law. We should sue them!!!!!
Traffic police you got to speed up the case! Do not drag it over 3 years! The fella’s driving license should be immediately on suspension! Look at that arrogant driver! 19years old and wear a cross on his chest.. God bless him in future.
Paul and I were among the original Dahonites when Speedmatrix came into business but we later also developed a fondness for Bromptons (!) and Moultons, about which we had many conversations. Paul generously shared with me a lot of tips and “secrets” about bicycles. I was looking forward to our next chat when the shocking news arrived; may that drunken brat get what he deserves! Paul is one of the greatest Singaporeans I have ever met and I will never forget him. My condolences to his wife and family.
I think they should trace his parents as well and make sure that all eyes are on them so they cannot pay their way to get the idiot child out of trouble. He should and must face consequences of killing someone
my condolences. May he rest in peace.
Did the Traffic Police capture any part of the ECP where the accident happened? Clearly all the cams along expressways must have captured the sequence of events?
Dear Sandra be strong your family is in my prayers…..I used to bowl with you and Paul in Katong when you both werent even married at that time. His positive atitude towards life has always amaze me..May God bless you with his love and and care and be with you from no on.May Paul rest in peace.
this is so sad! the photos really make it so shocking and real. condolences from our company- http://www.safeauto.com/
The 19 year old should go to jail. He does not seem remorseful. He has caused a precious life and make 2 young children lost their father. How is Paul’s family going to survive? Since he is so filthy rich, driving his own car at such a young age,the 19 year old should pay for all the living expenses + education expenses for Paul’s family.(But it does not mean that he can escapte the jail term by just simply doing compensation). I really want to see this young man being punished.
Rest in peace, Paul.
My deepest condolences. May he rest in peace.
DRUNK DRIVING IS THE HEIGHT OF IRRESPONSIBLITY. THIS IS AN UNNECESSARY LOSS OF LIFE, AN OUTRAGE.
Sad to hear about this. I hope the driver goes to jail for life. Dumb ass.
I hope Singapore will get serious about drunk driving and reckless (high speed) driving. Both are still far too common. One suggestion of a place to start: breathalize drivers leaving Clark Quay on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Success is virtually guaranteed.
and this young bloke will only be fined and have his license suspended (that is, if he’s a first time offender)
Rest in peace Paul.
Bro Paul rode like a man in his twenties. Fast and strong. He was one of the star riders in the Dahon vs Roadies shootout I orgz years ago. His passion for cycling is inspirational and he has touched many of us in the folding bike community, not just on the saddle. Paul, my dear friend and buddy, will always be remembered of all of us. If anything, Im sure he will want us to continue riding and enjoying the fellowship of cycling together here in Singapore and overseas. I miss you Paul!

Hope that the Paul’s family will stay strong and begets all kindness that he had once showered upon others. My heartfelt condolence.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” – Revelations 21:4
This verse came to me while I was pondering on the incident. It encouraged me a lot, and i hope it does to you too.
Dear Brother Paul, you are rejoicing with the Lord now. Hallelujah! You are dearly missed here. My family dearly miss you. Thank you for showing us that it is the legs and not the bike that matters. It unforgettable when you showed us how a small bike can overtake a racer! Totally amazing. Thank you for teaching Ethan how to swim. Thank you for your advice to Wendy regarding bikes and gears. Always ready to help and advise. Brother Paul you not only show us that you are helpful, kind, patient and humble. Above all else brother Paul you have shown us how to be a gentleman and have fun and fitness on the bicycle. Rest in peace and we dearly miss you. We will continue to ride with pride thinking of you!
Let the law deal with him on the traffic offence violation.
When that is done, make sure that the deceased parties side commence civil lawsuits against the errant and callous driver and their family to compensate them thoroughly.
Make sure that this asshole of a young punk and his parents pay financially for the loss experienced by the deceased families.
If you’re reading this , the 19 years old driver. How would you feel if the victim is yr father? Killed by a fcuking drank driver! Angry? Think not only you should go jail , u should be the one to raise the victim’s teenage kids n take care of his family’s expenses for the rest of their life!!!! Yr parent , rich enough to buy a 5 series BM surely can afford the consequences that u have cause since their only concern on their son’s verdict!!!!!
My deepest condolences. I would very much like to help Paul’s family with regards to monetary issues but i’m a little empty right now
The ignorant brat will get his just desserts, hope he’ll get run-down in courts and suffer heavy punishment and fines and hope you’ll get some money from that twat to support your lovely child. God Bless you family and Paul, Rest in peace.
Drink and drive… Just jail him ban him from touching the steering.. Freak this retarded DRINK AND DRIVE… can’t believe it hey to tat freak I’m younger then u and I definitely think better then u…
R.I.P a great father a great Singaporean…
Drunk drivers again… they cause hurt, pain, loss of lives (which may include themselves).. can’t they learn the hard truth of drunk driving?
Missing dearly my great cycling buddy on numerous cycling events. You’ve such a great passion for this sport, I imagine you will still enjoy your cycling in the route of the other world.
You will always be with us in all our Speedhorns rides.
saw the scene minutes after the accident happened. A young lady was got out of the car, walked to the driver side and took out something from the car; it was obvious that the group of youngsters has been carousing the night before. She was not able to stand without the help of another male friend. In between, these youngsters were not even looked remorseful nor regret. They were still smiling at each other. They did even bother to take a look at the victim who was lying on his stomach.
Personally, I feel that not only the driver should be punished but the whole group of them as they were part of the group and they are also responsible of their action.
Hi Lee, its sad enough for the family and friends, they do not need someone like you to fan the flames and add unnecessary comments. Quite clearly no one in their right mind would be smiling after getting into an accident. Additionally, I believe that a car has only one steering wheel, I can never imagine how the passengers would be responsible for the errant drink driving act of the irresponsible young driver. Please reflect and re-wire your thoughts as this page has no space for blasphemous comments like yours.

I knew Paul Lim for the last 40 years. He is a caring person and down to earth. Also a caring husband and father. I shall miss him in the choir. I believe God has taken him back so that he could rest in his holy presence. His departure has left a void in my heart and I will always cherish the happy memories he left behind.
This drunk should have crashed his car into the back of a dumper truck, but chose instead a pickup. Think again how cheap our lives are when we are out cycling on weekends between 4 to 7 am. You may think less traffic is safe, but studies have shown that less traffic means more speeding and reckless driving. And there are many drunk drivers behind the wheels at those hours. I think it is much safer to cycle in peak or heavy traffic, at least people are not speeding but there is congestion only.
Deepest condolence to Paul’s family. Makes me boiling pissed off that there are still reckless drunk drivers out there. T.P.’s educational messages and the current set of laws of this country are not doing much to deter such traffic accidents from happening.
Shame to the 19 y.o. idiot! Shame to his parents! Shame to all those passengers!
May retribution befall them!!
That’s terrible. We seriously have to stop this from happening. I think it may be time we raise the minimum age for driving in Singapore.
Will truely miss you, uncle Paul sob sob…
I remember in the 1989s, we went to Taman Negara Malaysia for a race cum tour, told a train there organized by an tour angency here. Part of the race route, the hilly road was so steep, granny gear won’t even do. But have get off to push bike. I was busy racing, you and chris was busy taking pictures along the race
Remember taking bumboat from Changi to Sungai Rengit with your life guard friends. Stay at budget hotel- only 1 hotel that allow bicycle to go into the room – nice aunty. eat seafood ….. off road riding, taking pictures…
Once we went cycling so late, i had to stay over night at your old place at Lor Kirat. At night hungry, your mom make milo for me
Did some riffle range to macritchie ride with you too, until i fell and got a deep cut on my knee. You motobike tongpan me to toapayoh poly clinic to get it stitch up. After that, i stopped real riding till now, almost 20yrs now.
Thanks to you all your kindness and being such a caring uncle all the way.
I will miss you so much
Dear Sandra and family, take care. Paul lives in my mind and heart always. You have the nicest husband in the world. I’ll sure he is setting up a bike shop up in heaven. If i need to service my steering headset bearing or retension my wheel in the future, in paradise, i find you ok ??
May God always be with you people and victim’s family members. Paul would be very happy knowing that he has so many good friends.
He is 21 years old. Lives in pasir ris. I’m ashamed of someone like him living in my estate.
Mr Paul was my swimming instructor years back in the 1990s. He was a friendly and knowledgable mentor, who taught us to be what we were in swimming.
It really break my heart to hear this news. Paul, Rest In Peace. You will always be rememebered! To the family of Paul, my condolences! Strong and might be with you!
Will miss you terribly buddy Paul…having the privilege of cycling with you in the days of old has created a deep seated sense of pain and lost…rest well my friend…memories of you will linger till the end of time.
A word from the moderator – we recieved numerous comments and encouragement for Paul’s widow and 2 sons. At the same time we had to moderate very harsh language that were inappropriate to be posted. Fact is: An unfortunate death has occurred and 3 lives are impacted by this tragic incident. YOU can help them, please dig deep, be generous and send your cheques so that we can present it to Sandra asap.
Personally I am saddened and feel the even deeper sadness that the 2 boys are experiencing.
In any case, this case is being investigated by the police and I am sure that with all the evidence via the photos, blood tests, breath tests, road cams, etc justice will prevail. For the 19 year old who is responsible, this death is going to be on your conscience for the rest of your life. For his friends who were in the car when this happened, do the right thing or you are considered as an accessory to a reckless act as you were a witness to the accident and you be liable for purgery should you lie to the police and the Courts.
We want to thank everyone for their help, white gifts and kind words during Paul’s wake. Let’s help Paul’s family rebuild their lives.
Uncle Paul taught me swimming since I was…6-7? Really young.
He followed me through to my Gold-Star award, and I’m glad that he was my swimming instructor. Even through the years when I reached 13-14, I finished my Goldstar and he stuck with me. Always encouraging me to stick until the Gold-Star.
And when I finally took the test, he popped by to monitor my progress throughout the time of the test, giving me the occasional thumbs up and prompting me from the side to keep moving, to keep going, to not stop the momentum.
When I asked for my timing, he did the usual trick of telling me that I’m behind by about 2-5 laps, and to quicken my pace.
He was the best ever swimming coach, and one of the best general fitness coaches I’ve had in my 18 years.
Rest In Peace.
Condolences to the family, whom I don’t admit to knowing that well.
I have met Gideon when I was much younger, but I doubt he remembers who I am^^;
If we meet though, cheers in honour of your father. Same goes to all commenters here.
he is from my camp……..he’s always like that one
I m just a random passerby that hopped pass and i know that he s really a great man and he has went home to be with the Lord.I send my deepest regards to his family members who are affected in this incident. never stop believing in God. He as his reasons for everything He does.
It’s a pity that the lorry did not have a video recorder to nail that errant driver down. I hope he does not go scot-free with legal help and connections from his “well-to-do” parents.
Hey, “well-to-do parents”, encouraged your son to be brave and owned up! This is good for his future. Otherwise, he will live with guilt for the rest of his life…..
What happened to this warning ? Drink dont drive.
Why did the passengers not stop him ? Cant they take cab/park the car overnight or get someone who did not drink to drive ?
My deepest condolences, rest in peace.
I vividly remember Paul who brought me into the foldable bicycle world, and sold me my first foldable bicycle, a Dahon Speed D7.
I’m at a loss of words. My condolences, rest in peace.
My son Jaden & I will always remember Paul in our hearts as he was the best dwimming coach. Without him, I wouldn’t have overcome my fear of the water & finally learnt to swim at almost 40.
THANK YOU Paul. You will be greatly missed.
My deepest condolences to Sandra & the 2 boys. Be strong as i am sure Paul would want you to be happy always. Take care too.
Dear Alvin,
Thanks for your kind words to us. We try to do what is possible and at this juncture, this is our own way of helping Paul – through helping his family with a soft landing with our talents and resources.
We will be putting up an auction for TWO special edition Moulton TSR 9 which is similar to Paul’s TSR 9 to help raise more money for the family. The bike has been sponsored by a MBS patron(wants to remain anonymous)and all proceeds go to Sandra, Gideon and Silas.
Will be posting this soon.
